Mustangs Race Past Tigers to Advance

SMU Mustangs defeat Clemson 65-59 to advance to NIT finals

In a recurring theme in the NIT tournament, the Mustangs came out looking sluggish and had trouble getting started in their semi-final game at Madison Square Garden, and they once again went in at the half with a deficit. But in True SMU fashion, they fought back and snatched victory in the final minutes.

Regardless of Ending; Mustangs’ Season Has Been a Special One

Mustangs heading to New York to try to win NIT

When the season started, most “experts” and people around the program were thinking SMU would show a vast improvement from last season and probably finish around the middle of the conference. But I don’t think anyone would have expected the Mustangs to start out like they did and make it nearly the whole season without losing at home.

In fact, they finished the season with only one loss at home, and the lone loss was to defending National Champion Louisville. Even though the Mustangs lost their last three games to end the season and were “snubbed” by the selection committee, they have risen to the challenge and are taking the NIT by storm. While it isn’t the marquee tournament, the NIT is a great showcase for this program which looks to be just starting a rise to national prominence.

Mustangs Use 2nd Half Run to Whip Tigers

The SMU Mustangs defeated the LSU Tigers on Wednesday night in front of a sold out and crazy Moody Coliseum. While the final score was 80-67, the game wasn’t always in hand for the Mustangs. The Tigers seemed to control the first half and kept the game in their control for the better part of the first half. LSU came out and seemed to find ways to keep LSU against the ropes during the early part of the game. SMU also had a slow start in their first round match up against UC Irvine, but much like the last game, SMU was able to find some rhythm to get back in the game.

SMU Mustangs Defeat UC Irvine to Advance in NIT

SMU Mustangs advance in NIT

The SMU Mustangs defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters 68-54 on Thursday night in the first round match up in the NIT tournament. The mood was set early on with the Crowd starting a chant of “SMU” before the opening tip, unfortunately for the Mustangs, they had a little bit of a sluggish start, but were able to adjust during the course of the game to turn a slow start into a fast win.

SMU Snubbed by Tourney; #1 in NIT

Sunday night we found out the SMU Mustangs were not picked to play in the NCAA tournament, which seemed to send a shock around the College Basketball world. Many of the experts had the Mustangs at least making the “first four” play in game if not being a middle seed somewhere in the tourney. But the selection committee ended up going against the Mustangs because of three tough losses to end the season. The Houston loss in the American Athletic Conference Tournament was probably the dagger, because they needed to have a good showing to have a chance to improve their status with the selection committee.

Early Look at SMU Mustangs 2014 Schedule

Much like North Texas Mean Green, SMU also just released their 2014 schedule to the public. While their schedule is front loaded with some tough games at the start, the middle and back end of the schedule look to be manageable and I am sure June Jones and staff would like to see an improvement in the win column this year, since last year ended with such a down note. And for the second year in a row, SMU will deal with a change in their conference opponents since the American Conference has had some teams bolt for other conferences, but at the same time they welcome in some former Conference USA opponents as well.

SMU Mustangs Receive End Of Season Honors

The SMU Mustangs men’s basketball team is coming off one if it’s best seasons in a very long time, and while they became “media darlings” during the last half of the season and one of the hottest tickets in Dallas. But it wasn’t just the fans, local media and some national pundits who took notice; everyone seemed to take notice of the surprising change from last year on the Hilltop. This is why the Mustangs will be entering their conference tournament with the highest ranking since 2002-2003, not to mention getting nationally ranked for the first time since 1984-1985. A lot of people will attribute these changes to Head Coach Larry Brown, who is in his second season in Dallas. Brown was just recently named a Henry Iba Coach of the Year finalist and he was just named the US Basketball Writers District VII coach of the year.

High hopes on Hilltop; Mustangs stampede into new conference

smu-mustangs-footballLast year I thought the SMU Mustangs would rise to the top of their previous conference and walk away a champion before joining what was planned to be the Big East conference this season. I also thought Texas transfer Garret Gilbert would step up and prove to be a good quarterback under June Jones system. While he did show improvement as the season progressed, he still showed everyone why he got benched at Texas. Going into his second season under June Jones to be better from the start than last year, but I don’t see him improving to the hype he had coming out of high school.

Football Landscape Changing in Dallas-Fort Worth

SMU PonyOn July first, College football fans saw a shift in the foundation for the local teams. Both North Texas and Southern Methodist changed conferences to begin strengthening the quality of football played in the Dallas Area. Last year we saw TCU join the Big XII conference and hold their own against what some consider some of the best talent in the country. Meanwhile SMU and North Texas had been left floundering near the bottom of the Football food chain in the metroplex.
